Identity

An individual’s persona can be built from lifelong personality character traits that stem from emotional deficit of parenting,as well as other people’s notions of them that the person unmindfully has internalized. These attributes, which the person may be partially or fully unaware of, become part of her own belief system. These distorted descriptions of self are planted within the mind as being accurate and valid, hence giving the person an identity that might not ring true or fit internally. The perplexity of such an identity causes conflict and confusion.

Whether the person somewhat accepts this identity or is uncomfortable with it, the opinions of others throughout life typically plays a crucial role in the opinion of self and choices in life. The person conducts herself within the parameters of that not-so-genuine self. Often the person is able to fit into society with this acceptable behavior and reap societal rewards but is uncomfortable with the image and decisions to belong. Such a person who dismisses her own values in order to belong and be part of a social network but is uncomfortable doing so can become distressed’ harming her own self-esteem and self-worth.

Those who are lucky enough to recognize the pain and the lowered self-esteem look for ways out of the dilemma. Again, not being able to be your true self can be painful and awkward, lowering self-esteem. Knowing that the emotional confusion can be debilitating compels the person forward to help herself. The effort is through pure determination to make change that is comfortable and accepting to the inner self.
